Another tool question
« on: June 09, 2010, 03:41:42 pm »
Seeing so many tools or links to tools lately got me to wondering how old this little level I have is.  Haven't been able to find
anything on the company or nail down a time frame yet. Surely some of you tool owners would be able to hazard a guess (or
even know  ;)) the age of this baby size (6")  Elliott Lucas Elvicta.  I'm guessing 40's ??

Nice little spirit level , sapphire .

100% certain it's post-1920s' , exact age ....well , I don't know .

It looks like it's a mahogany & brass model from Elliot Lucas .

Nice little level sapphire.  I am not familiar with Elliot Lucas...must be strictly Canadian/English market.  Very similar to what I call a torpedo level.  Fits in your pocket and is very handy.  Judging by the color of the level liquid, it would be from 40s on as you mentioned.

The one Elliot Lucas tool I've owned was a pair of pliers that came in the original tool kit for a new Jaguar automobile , c1960s' .

Maybe this is for Jag owners also...just to keep them level-headed when they are driving.   :D

Ahh, so now can I have the Jag to go with my level??  ::)

E.L. is still making tools. I've seen some older dated levels but the opening over the 'bubble' was usually made as two
windows rather than the one longer one.  And the 'neon' yellow/green suggested to me that this was not likely from an
earlier era. I got my first set of real tools from my dad at the age of six (two daughters so I became the chosen 'son').....
love the fact that some fifty years later I still get to 'play' with some of his old tools.

A similar level with divided window is on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-BRASS-VINTAGE-LEVEL-W-MARPLES-ELLIOTT-LUCAS-/170496707058  and another one (archived) listed only as £5.50 ELLIOTT LUCAS MAHOGANY SMALL LEVEL  from http://www.linksmultiple.co.uk/collectables/tools_hardware.html does not give date of sale.
This one ended May 27 and also has the split level window http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antique-Elliott-Lucas-Elvicta-Wooden-Brass-Level-/330436246984?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Collectable_ToolsHasdware_RL&hash=item4cef88fdc8

Price seems to hover around 5 pounds and are called boat-shaped levels in the UK.  That is a nice little level for that price.

Here is an 8" level with single window that sold at $22.50 recently  (go down to #31)  http://www.patinatools.org/auction_2010/2010AuctionPrices.html
