What in the world is this candle holder called?
« on: June 11, 2010, 06:49:46 am »
I have been trying every which way to search for these. It's from the movie "Sleepy Hollow." It looks to be punched tin, uses a candle and it spins around so that the images flow around the room. What are these called? I've tried so many search keywords and can't find any motion lamps that use candles and are metal. Just ones from the 1930's and newer that use light bulbs. Time period of the movie is the 1800's. I realize they'd probably be super pricey but I've got to have one. Thanks!

That's it!  :D
It's driving me crazy.
And I'm trying to figure out how it spins without electricity. With a candle. Sigh...
Actually, I think the mom spun it and walked away. Great, now I gotta go put the movie in.

Magic latern brings up the little kerosene slide ones like the one I posted a few weeks back. But I'll try shadow.

Thanks for the help Sapphire, now I just get to stalk ebay and wait for an antique one to show up. :)
All the ones on there don't spin and are new paper ones.

Did you ever see Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase?  He was trying to fix one of those spinning Christmas ornaments, 'arms' with angels (I think), over a candle.  The heat from the candle creates the updraft that moves the arms....... similar to a miniature windmill.  ;)

I knew it had to be something like that, I just couldn't figure it out.
That's my husband's favorite movie. I've seen it a hundred times but I never really pay attention. Now I'll have to watch it again. :)

Now, the lamps were called motion lamps.  Had one myself but put it away and the humidity warped it so bad it couldn't be fixed.  Really upset me.  My father brought it back from military/overseas to my grandmother - had a cardboardish type frame with silk overlay picture - when it spun it was a mill with water flowing and the large wheel would appear to spin.

Now...these candle/heat movement items are still used in Germany  - more often seen at Christmas and the holidays.  (Mother's side of family is from Germany and we have wooden holders made like this.
