Anyone know a thing or two about old pottery?
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:25:50 am »
My Grandma (who isn't exactly internet savvy) showed me two of her ceramic pieces today and was curios if I could find some info on them. I kindly obliged, despite not knowing much on the subject.

The first piece photoed below is apparently a Mexican vase. She bought it for $20 at a good will store. It's in good shape and is a matte black, however we're not sure on the age. It picked her interest since she recalled a famous Mexican ceramicist who did her work in all black (I vaguely recall hearing about her in high school ceramics). It has a mark on the base we believe to be some sort of signature type thing. If anyone could give me more info, or a possible ID/appraisal  I'd be stoked. Also does anyone know the ceramists who I'm referring to's name?

Second we have this little lamp type thing, she refers to as the "genie lamp". We know nothing about it other than it's old. My grandma is 85, this piece was given to her by her great niece (who had had it for a long time). So it has to be at least 100 years old. I can't seem to find any markings on it. It seems to be very well made. The glaze on it is absolutely amazing (my cell phone pictures do not even remotely do it justice). Any help on this would be appreciated as well.

If any more info is needed I can ask my Grandma a get back to you in a pretty timely manner, also If better pictures are needed I can get them. Any help would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Nice looking piece of black pottery.  Is Doņa Rosa who you are thinking of?  (San Bartolo, Mexico)
Oaxaca black polished pottery is famous with many artisans.

The second piece looks newer than 100 years to me.  3 point kiln mark it appears on the bottom?  Have you used your wishes yet? :)
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

I believe it is Doņa Rosa, that I'm thinking of.

It seem that that piece is newer, however my grandma swears it's older than her. Yes, that most definitely is a kiln mark on the base. Sadly all the wishes were used up long ago :'(
