Hi,
I picked up this old clock, last weekend, in a little warehouse that specialises in tools, and saw this on the floor propped up against the wall. I like clocks, and have a few, so asked if it was for sale (and resisted asking why he was selling an old clock). We agreed on £20 (about $30), which was a bit of a gamble as there was no key, it was really quite dirty, the door wasn't sitting straight, the centre moulding is missing, and there was damage to the top with a finial missing.
I cleaned it up, wound it up, regulated it over the week, and it's kept perfect time, has a nice beat and chimes beautifully
Looking at the door at some point in the past someone has replaced two hinge screws which don't fit, so I need to find replacements for those... My neighbour is very good at turning wood and offered to turn another finial to match the missing one... Lo and behold, when I went to remove it I realised that some enterprising soul had already replaced them with cut down chess pawns!!
It's no Gustav Becker, but I'm always amazed that I can pick up lovely pieces such as this for so very little ... and I'm not complaining
