200 yr. old deer head deer head
« on: December 24, 2010, 02:11:45 pm »
I hadn't plan to put this on, but I replied in the wrong spot and you can't delete a topic, so enjoy the picture of the deer head made in Russia, over 200 yrs ago, and brought here by my husbands family. Next time I'll be more careful. It needs repair on the neck. It was carved  by my husbands grandfather's, father.

Very cool! Where in the house would something like that have been hung originally?

The topic seems OK to me.  I can delete it but I do not see why unless you want me to.  I have seen similar wood carved deer heads before sans the antlers.  Those look like leather or something.  What are the antlers made of?  I would repair it or at least stabilize the neck.  I can't tell if that is a crack, split, or something.

No, it's okay I wanted to post something about the furniture and it didn't come up under the topic, so I slid this in. We were always told that like my husband he was a builder in Russia. He built the first two story house where they lived. I would imagine it might have hung in the living room. I always liked the mouth area where he craved the teeth. I sware my whole house is atime capsule.

I like items like this and have the utmost respect for the day and age when people were basically self sufficient and possessed many skills.Far cry from what society is turning out presently.
Funny with our advancing technology how when something is gained something is lost.Think of how dependent we've become just on the internet, without it our lives would be upside down.Thinking our fore fathers would really have a good laugh seeing what we would call a hardship opposed to what they would use that term for.
Thanks for posting this as a reminder to me.

They had a PBS special about a gut who moved to Alaska, and he made everything by hand, from spoons, and plates. He also built his house. They showed him cutting down huge trees by himself. 200 yrs ago people had to be really strong with the lack of conviences we have today. There are electric saws, backhoes. Either they had great core strenght or bad backs. My husband's great grandfather was probably relaxing on his day off whittling this deer while he chatted with some friends. Today they would be watching football in front of a TV.

Do you know where in Russia.

I have traveled extensively in Siberia area....and there are lots of historical carvings on buildings even in that area!
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

My husband's family just had a family reunion, and there is one person who was 99 yrs old. His last name Komisar. It was his father who came with my husband's family to Galveston Tx. Then from there they went to Iowa. From Russia to Texas, lol The generations at this reunion was amazing, but it's the fact that everyone knows the stories. In a matter of fact, my husband's cousin is writing a book. We all got a copy of a verison. We all love the stories.
