Another Piece of Furniture - Possibly a Children's Dresser
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:25:11 pm »
Got another one need help on,  basically what is it and how old?  From the dove tailing on the sides it seems to be the newer style of dove tailing (post 1890) however what is interesting is the porcelain wheels on the bottom.

That really resembles hosman's commode to me.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe a bit newer than mine. It looks around 1900-ish to me. Those are definitely older wheels and the dovetails look machine cut. I'm casting my vote around the turn of the century and it being a commode or washstand.

I did have baby furniture shaped like that, except there was a bar to hang things inside. The top was the changing of course, and the wheels were for easy mobility so you could stay with the baby. Mine was a different material, but built exactly the same.

I think the backsplash and style of the lower cupboard would make this a commode, but I agree, a later one than Hosman's.

Looks like a washstand to me too !!  My Grandmother had a bedroom suite made in the 30`s that had the same rollers.

It's going to 28 high x 29 3/4 wide by 14 5/16th deep.  Usually I wouldn't ask this but is there any value in this piece?  I'm running out of room and it's got to go.

What are the dimensions of the piece?

I can only say what it would sell for in my area and that would be around $30.   Because of the small size it would be a great piece for a childs room.  Attach that bar inside the door and a perfect place to hang baby clothes as someone said. Irregardless of its original intent,, someone can find a use for it.  Here, small pieces sell well .

Would probably bring about $70 in my area. I'd say to ask for more than $30 and let them talk ya down a little bit.

Agree w/ Hosman (tho we are in the same area  ;D ).  Also, I wouldn't describe it as a dresser and limit buyers imagination to the bedroom.  That piece would work so well in almost any room someone needs to hide clutter... (powder room, media storage, hallway cabinet, etc....)

Good idea to ask more than what you actually want. You can always come down but you can`t go up .
