Antique Bird Cage?
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:21:57 pm »
Hello all,

I have came across this piece and from what i have been told it is well over fifty years old. it looks like a bird cage and operates like one, and it also has a heavy duty copper liner at the base of the inside of the cage. I have searched online for info for this thing and have came up empty handed, any light this community could shed on this would be appreciated. I can provide more photos if this would help.

Thanks in advance

Nick

Welcome Nick!
I'm a bit of an antique bird cage freak and yours is beautiful. The wood ones like yours can be a bit tricky to date because they have been made in this style pretty much continuously for the past 100+ years or so. Does it have any screws/nails/hinges or other metal hardware that you can photograph? Or maybe a picture of the underneath? A picture of the liner might be handy, too. I know of a site that sells antique cages and maybe they can help. I have seen them post on this forum in the past. I'll go find it right now.

there is not one piece of hardware on this thing at all, except one like half of a ball bearing to keep the door closed. The hinge door contains no hardware and it is basically one of the pieces of wood that rotates in place. The underside is flat and smooth. The copper base is actually a 3 part system with 2 smaller ones on the side and a bigger one in the center. Tomorrow i can get some better in depth photos for you if that would help more.

Lovely! What kind of a tray does it have? The tray may tell us something. I suspect this one will either be antique or an Asian reproduction.
The ball bearing sounds like a bullet catch:
