World's Columbian Exposition 1893 -Souvenir Straight Razor
« on: July 26, 2011, 01:19:00 pm »
So, I was in my basement doing laundry today and noticed a small box of well, boxes.  My parents had them in the attic and must have left them in the basement before moving and leaving the house to me.  Anyway, I never really noticed them before.  Given my curious nature, I decided to look at them.  Nothing in all of them except one which caught my eye.  I'm including pics so you can see what I'm looking at.
I checked online and found the following info:

World's Columbian Exposition Engraved Souvenir Strait or Cut-throat Razor, manufactured by H. Boker & Co. Approx. 6" long.

There is an outer box, which when opened in half, opens to what I believe to be the original mirror for it and to a second box.  In that second box, which has the maker names engraved in it as well as the words "Price $4.00" engraved in it to.  Due to the writing style and overall appearance, I can tell that it was there originally and not new at all.

The razor is in the second box and has a beautiful engraving on the blade, which states "World's Columbian Exposition 1893" under the engraving of a city.

The razor does have a small piece missing out of it.

I can't help but think that the box only adds to the value of it as a package and have never seen one of these before.  My question is, roughly how many of these might be left, better yet with the box, and then what kind of price might this package be worth?

Thanks in advance!

Here is one selling for $40.  http://malon.ecrater.com/p/8446092/1893-columbian-expo-sheffield-england-straight
I saw references to others and they do not seem to be rare. You'll have to deduct some from the value because of the nick in the blade, but having the original box will add some also. http://www.straightrazorplace.com should be able to help.

With the razor being in poor condition as well as the box being in poor condition (from what I can see) I think you would be lucky to get $10 on a good day. There are many, many straight razors out there and people seemed to hang on to souvenirs from the World's Fairs. For a straight razor to bring top dollar, the razor has to be mint and the box has to be excellent or there must be something very special about the razor. I do not see any of those attributes in this case.
