Wow so much good help here . I looked at it in sunlight real close and see no signatures at all . It was painted on this frame because each edge has slight paint marks where the brush touched . The top edge has several paint dots looking like the artist was testing the color ? The canvas is held on by old nails all around . I see alot of empty holes where nails were like maybe it was put on a different frame cause the original went bad or was not sturdy .

That is how it should have been done !! All looks correct and the extra holes could be caused be reframing or simply re-stretching of the canvas after drying !! You really should have it looked at by an expert !! I certainly would !!  Please let us know what you find out  !!  Its an exceptional piece from what I can see !!

Agree with mart should be  looked at by an expert, many local art Museums would be happy to take a look,My local art museum just had a night for $5.00 per item they would give you history and information on your piece. Or you could send photos &  information to well known auction houses. let us know what you find!!!

wayward, you may be on to something there........my eyes aren't what they used to be but looks like an M in there to me.  Idaho, you need good light (try holding the painting on an angle and moving until detail comes in to view) and a loupe or at least a good magnifying glass. Would love to know what comes out of this one!!

Do you have a friend that could email the pics for you ??  Christies has an address that you can email pics for an auction estimate if you are going to sell it !!   Go to their site and click on "auction estimate" !! Or "info@christies.com" for information about their services !!
