The Case of the Puzzling Metal Tea (?) Kettle
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:03:33 pm »
Oh boy, I want to post like 20 photos on this one.  This thing has me sooo puzzled.  It's 10" tall, 4.6" wide at the base, 10" wide from edge of handle to tip of spout.  It weighs about 2 lbs and I was surprised it was that low because it felt substantially heavy in my hands, but that may also be because of the odd weight distribution with that long spout.  I don't know if it's brass, copper, bronze, or just painted to look like such because there are areas where it looks like silver around the handle on the outside and on the bottom inside.  Then the applied gold gilt pieces I have no idea what those are made out of or why they "spread" into the design (maybe they didn't completey separate from a mold?).  Nor do I know how old it is, what it is (really a tea kettle?  Just decorative?), or where it was made...there are no markings I could find of any kind.  It looks handmade in the way the metal is tucked in over the lip, the top of the lid is slightly crooked, and certain details of it.  I might venture to guess it was made in India based on the design characteristics, but that would just be a shot in the dark.  Any ideas, anyone?  I'm so intrigued by it, though!

Crud, sorry, one of those topics can be removed but it won't let me delete it...I didn't think it went through because my internet went out for a minute.  Sorry!!!

I may be renewing this piece in the "restoration" thread if I can find out more about it and I feel its worth restoring and/or its possible for me to restore it.  Haha!

It looks to be made of copper with applied (soldered on) “cast” brass medallions and handle. The spout, lid hinge and the bottom are also soldered onto the body.
