Grindley platters question
« on: August 19, 2011, 03:26:21 pm »
Hi,  I am wondering if anyone has information on WH Grindley china?  I have 3 platters and replacements.com research identified the pattern as GRl403 but I am unable to find any information on value or on the pattern in general.  Looking for possible age, value etc.  When I google this pattern number there are no items found.  I found these in someone's trash they put in an alley.  Great find!!!

Oh and replacements.com does not have any pieces of this pattern in stock or I might have been able to get more information.

Thanks Mart and I have tried that and come up with only 4 results.  One is collectorsquest, the next is the potteries.org which has information on the stamp - then rubylane and then an author.  Hmmmm wonder - it is actually gri403 which might make a difference.   I have tried both.  replacements.com is the one that told me the pattern # but they don't even have it listed in their database - which is wierd.  I can find no other reference to this pattern which leads me to believe it was really unpopular or maybe rare?

There are over 300 pieces listed on ebay now !!  Problem is,, I looked through several pages and they have no bids !! If you are looking for a value on your platters,, $20.00 for all three is about what I would expect if they were sold  !! If nothing by Grindley is selling,, rarity of your pieces would make no difference !! They did have one oval platter that looked like yours but only looked at the thumbnails !!

Hi Mart,

No it doesn't say China - says England and then WH Grindley and Co. - when I looked at the different stamps for different time periods - this would have been made between 1914 - 1925.  I have found many many Grindley patterns on replacements.com, Ebay and many other auction sites but nothing in this pattern.

I noticed they aren't selling either - I have not been able to figure out how to look at closed auctions on Ebay to see if anything else has sold at any time but right now you are right.  Might just keep them - either way - someone's trash turned out to be something pretty nice  :-)

I don`t know how to do that either !! What I usually do is to change the "sort by" on the page to "ending soonest" rather than "best match" which is stupid to me !!  Match what ???  Ending soonest tells you what people are actually bidding on and winning !!

I guess the value really doesn't matter much.  I like finding nice things that others think are trash.  What had my curiosity peaked is that replacements.com research dept. notified me of the pattern number but there is no such pattern number listed on their site.  Even the ones without images are at least listed.  Then the fact that I can't find anything even closely matching on any of the sites I have visited - some were very common and I saw them everywhere.  Just curiosity I suppose  :-)

Grindley also made hotel glassware !! Its possible that yours were made for a hotel and were a smaller production run.  You know that hotel glassware is frequently broken so that might account for the inability to find it !! Just not much of it left !!
