Red Pottery Boat with Bottomstamp
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:26:23 pm »
I have several questions about this boat:  1) The bottomstamp is very hard to make out, that is the clearest it'll get under a magnifying glass.  Could it be Stanford Sebring?  2)  It would help me a LOT if I knew the name of this painting technique, where there is squiggly paint that you can feel the texture of over glazed ceramic.  There must be a name for that I would think but I can't find out what, I'm hoping someone will know!  3)  That white staining on the inside, I don't know what it is but when I used a wet soapy cloth it looked like it went away, and then when it dried it came back.  I wish I could get it off but I'm afraid of risking the finish...any advice?  There are also some smaller brown stains on the inside.  4)  What is this for and what the style is called...a boat vase?

This piece is funny because it photographs so different from how it really looks...the black squiggly paint stands out with much more contrast, but when I photograph it it's like the black lines almost disappear.

It's 13 1/4" long, 4" front to back, 3" deep at center.

Also this part is even harder to make out:  3 numbers, a dash, and a 4th number.  Looks like 301-2 but can't say for 100%.

That is a Stanford Sebring for sure.  These are usually called Console Bowl, but are considered as Bread Bowls or Gondola.  Nice piece for sure and wish I could help with the glaze tech name, I would like to know too.  Not sure about the stains I have seen this in Glassware, Called cloudy Glass, which is from Dishwasher and Hot and Cold temp change too quickly.  Which may be the cause, these mid century pottery is not meant for the dishwasher, and should only be hand wash, this is why we see so mach Glaze Grazing and stanis on pottery and Glassware.

These were used as a vase of sorts with a flower arrangement on coffee/dining tables 50`s and 60`s !!  Had one or two similar to that !!

Thanks so much, all!  I really do wish I knew what that painting technique is called.  I really love it and would like to buy more pieces with it and keep some for myself  :)
