Conta & Boehme Fairing or not.
« on: September 30, 2011, 05:14:41 pm »
This took me ages to nail down the maker. It is a Conta & Boehme piece. Vase? I think it was made in 1890 from the information I have read. They changed to this mark that year. By 1891 they were required to have the name of the Country on it.
Found that info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_china_fairings

There is another item with the same mark, but I notice a space in between the outline where mine is solid. Makes me wonder why the difference.
http://cgi.ebay.ie/Small-Porcelain-Vase-Conta-Boehme-Rose-Blue-Ribbon-/270806025479?pt=Antiques_Decorative_Arts&hash=item3f0d4c0507

Then I found what seems to be the identical boy but different piece here:
http://www.amazon.com/Conta-Boehme-Possneck-Cherub-figurine/dp/B000MRFQQ4

Mine is about 6 1/2 inches high. About 5 inches across. It's pretty heavy!

I know this company made fairings but mine is so different that I think it is not. No numbers...but they did make some without. It does seem larger than most fairings...but they also made bigger ones.

I can't find the exact one and was wondering what it might be worth. There is a crack in the bottom and a chip off one of the leaves.

Thanks for any help.

Snowflake, here's a couple of names you could contact to see if they would identify your fairing for you..

Bottom of the page....

These web pages were compiled by J & R Vogel, and R Begley, who would be more than pleased to receive your comments or questions regarding any Conte & Boehme items whatsoever.

I was just reading. Fairings were numbered from 1870's and on. The numbers run from 2850 to 2899 and from 3300 to 3385. They were known as "Fairings" because they were given away at fairgrounds. I have to say that your Fairings doesn't look similar to the ones in the books.A lot of them had white bases with sayings. They were mostly made in Germany to resemble "Meissen" Your mark is accurate. There's a books out called " Vitorian Fairings and their Values" and "Victorian China Fairings"
" Energy and Persistence conquer all things."

I didn't think it looked like a fairing either. I think the same people made it. Could be wrong though. Hopefully I hear back soon. I e-mailed about my art work too and finally heard back, they want more info. So excited to find out.
