Antique wardrobe; wanting to learn more about it!
« on: November 20, 2011, 12:30:42 pm »
I bought this wardrobe at an antique store in DeFuniak Springs, Florida last month and was finally able to go pick it up this weekend. It has been paint black, but the paint looks very old. Before I bought it I looked online to see if I could find out what other wardrobes like it were selling for. I ended up paying $200 for it after some haggling. We have looked for a date or company name but were unable to find one. Those are also the original mirrors and hardware. It has wooden caster wheels but we took them off for the time being. There are back panels too but we haven't put them on yet, so thats why you can see the wall behind it. The doors were unlocked but the seller did not have the key (which I was kind of sad about, would have been neat to have the keys to it). I have looked all over the internet and haven't found one with this layout of doors and drawers. If anyone knows more about these types of wardrobes I'd love to hear it! :)

Your country style wardrobe is a pretty common piece and dates from around 1920 or so !! I say country style as it was a less expensive model than the more ornate ones with outside ornamentation !! Many of this type had simple wooden knobs !! Casters were used on everything back then !!  Dining, bedroom furniture all had casters !! Price you gave for it was a bit high for most areas !! It would have maybe sold for $100. here in Texas !!  Some of the old finishes they used then turned almost black over the years but could have had a later paint job !!  I would be surprised if it were an original black paint !!

There was an old hotel here that they tore down in 1970. I remember that every room was equipped with one of those style wardrobes. The hotel was built in 1912. At least you know that it dates back to the time when everyone wore a hat.

Hotels, boarding houses ect would have wardrobes similar to this !!  Most all of these took a standard type skeleton key !!  Next time you go antiqueing pick up a few with the lobes that will fit the lock !!  Shouldn`t be hard to find one that will fit !!
