old record player cabinet? and antique doors
« on: November 27, 2011, 12:39:08 am »
I have a couple of questions, first the cabnet. It was in a mobile home I bought 20+ years ago and I have held on to it. It was empty but a nice cabinet with a slide out shelf that looks like had the turntable on it. Don't know if it is considered antique so i am asking here if it is? Next question is on doors that were in the loft of my barn. Any idea what they are worth and should I remove the hardware that is still on some of them?
Thanks for any help.

If you are going to sell the doors then leave the hardware on them.

Some buyers will want them "just like they are" ........ others will "strip n' refinish" them.

There is not a big demand for such doors unless one is doing some "period" remodelling ...... or "just needs a door" for a shed, outbuilding, etc.

Both the doors and stereo cabinet appear to be from 50`s or so !! Could be a little later !!  While not antique still usable !! I would keep the cabinet !! Good quality solid exterior doors are pricy and could be sold easily !!  Style is what would hurt them as they have no glass but some people may not mind that !! Interior doors are fairly cheap used !!

Maybe it's just local interest, but old raised panel doors are a saleable item around here. People are using them for headboards, coat racks, etc. Prices seem to be about $20 and up.

Old doors make a great “drop-leaf” garage work table. Especially the “hollow core” doors (closet, bathroom, etc) with no glass or panels in them.

Leave the hinges on the door but remove the doorknob hardware …… and mount the door sideways on your garage wall so that it “swings” downward to the floor.

Then raise the door up to a level “work surface” position and measure from the doorknob “hole” in the door …. diagonally to the corner where the floor and wall meet. Then cut a stick of (knot free) wood that is ¾” thick, ….. by 1” to 1 3/8” wide ….. and whatever length you measured above. You should probably cut the stick 1” longer than you measured just to be “safe”.

Then raise the door up above “level” position, ….. place one end of the “stick” in the wall/floor corner, ….. lower the door down so that the upper end of the “stick” engages the  doorknob “hole” on the underneath side. Now check your tabletop for “level” and if not, ….. cut enough off the end of the “stick” so that it is.

Thereafter, when you need a “work surface” just raise the door up and put the “stick” in place …. and when done, …… just remove the “stick” and the door will hang flat against the wall out of your way.

Cheers

They are also "hot" being made into hall trees.  A simple bench is made and attached then hooks to hand coats.  They really look nice!
