Just starting out.. need some help
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:05:03 pm »
hey there ya'll!! So i am just starting out with collecting antiques.I have a few furniture pieces given to me by family which sparked my interest but now when I go looking for stuff and even buying i don't know hat these things are called!! Idk if i am getting ripped off, or getting a deal etc, etc, I try to google/ebay items just by description but its always a hit or miss with that.
I was wondering if someone could help me with a few recent items Ive bought and am thinking of buying.

1 is this lamp!!! i love the style got it for 35 bucks any idea the year, name... or what shade goes with it??

2. The buffet is  PERFECT for out pool room and fits our style! We love the European gaudy look but this one ha just enough quad without being too obnoxious!
i have no idea the era, style.. or what a going price would be. The tag was 1500 and I though that was pretty steep.

any info on these id really appreciate!!!
THANK YOU!!!

To me, the lamp appears to be from the 1970's or 80's in style. A nice silk shade would look good in my opinion.

The "buffet" would be a sideboard from the "Golden Oak" era of American furniture...early 1900's probably. If it's all original, $1500 would be OK, if you really love it. I bet they would be willing to consider an offer.

Just out of curiosity,, what did they tell you about the buffet ?? The top and bottom seem to have a color difference !!  I see a distinct German influence in the carving/trim style !!

Oh wow! Just noticed that!! Thank you!! Truth is we didn't ask bc its out of our price range and we were kind of in a rush.. I regret not staying and talking to the dealer now.
That's why we like this one, Mark! Just the right amount or carving for our style and easier maintenance! Lol! Dont get me wronge I love carvings, the more the better but I dont have the time to sit and oil every crack and crevasse with a fine tooth comb!

Another question: I figured out how to measure my lamp for the right size shade but having a hard time deciding on the color.
I'm definetly getting silk for my fabric but what color??? Off white?

In my opinion a nice cream color would look best but that would depend on your decorating scheme !!  Off white would look good as well !! I think the buffet is overpriced for most areas of the country !!  I wouldn`t give over $1000.  and that would depend on its condition !!  These types are just not in demand now days !! If you offered $900. and they turned it down,, it would not be the smartest move they ever made !! I would guess they have about $400. or $450. in it if not less !!
