Bought a new painting with a rip
« on: January 24, 2012, 12:26:41 pm »
Hi...

Can anyone tell me how to fix a torn canvas? I bought a really nice painting and in process of transport i tore the canvas. Maybe there is a kit or something...

thanks

I know of no 'kits' for repairing 'ripped' canvases .... I'd suggest that you get in touch with a local art conservator (for a pro repair) .... in the event that your painting is of fairly low value , the cost of a conservators' services may exceed the value of your painting .

There are also 'non-conservator' artists who do side-work repairing canvases , if you can find a willing person .
Usually torn canvases require some restoration of the painting (the ripped-through section that has been painted on the paintings' surface) itself , too .

I have seen many oil-on-canvas paintings that have been damaged , many of which have had badly-performed 'repairs/restorations' that were more costly to have re-repaired (as compared to the cost of 'doing it right the first time') .

Many frame shops also are small galleries and they are likely to be able to repair it with acid free materials fairly inexpensively !! Repair of the painting part is easy provided it is not a portrait !! Most lanscapes can be done and matched by a knowlegable artist !!  This is of course if like fancy said it is not an expensive painting !!  If it is,, get a conservator !!  You can find one through most museums or major galleries !!
Can you post a pic so we can see the damage ???  And is it a painting or a giclee print ??
