High Relief Still life Oil Painting Signed
« on: March 10, 2012, 09:37:12 pm »
Hi Guys,
This is an original high relief still life oil painting of flowers in a vase.  Signed MLC? (MLE?) Paper attached to a wooden board, measuring 24" X 18" (painting). I found it at a Salvation Army Thrift Store.  It struck me as an impressionist?  I've exhausted my search in trying to find the artist as a listed artist. No luck.  I was hoping that someone could share their opinion on the type of medium used and if it carry any value. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

PS-Several photos with slightly different angles.

The technique for your painting is called "impasto" which in simple terms means "thick paint" !! Many different ways this technique is used !! You said it was on a paper ground ?? Then it is likely acrylic since most oils would bleed through the paper and around the area you may be working on so I don`t think it is oil unless the paper was pretreated with a barrier !!  I like the work and its interesting but I don`t think the person is a listed artist,, more likely a local person and hobbyist.  Rarely does an artist that is painting for a living use initials !!  They want instant name  recognition !!  When you look at their art, they want you to remember the name !!  Kind of hard to go to a gallery and say,, I want to buy one of MLC`s paintings !!  Gallery owner says,, Who ????  Get my meaning ??  If I were you I would start looking at artists in your local yellow pages and those in surrounding areas !! Also take the painting to local galleries and see if they recognize the style !!

Mart you are the best! Thank you for your comment.  You made it really clear and easy to follow.  I once thought that it may be acrylic with a little finger action.  I like the suggestion of the local yellow pages and galleries, I'll do that.  Thanks again.
