1910 Mt Rainer postcards
« on: April 15, 2012, 10:35:14 am »

I know that the swastika was a symbol in many cultures before the Nazi's corrupted the symbol. But what is the relationship to Mt Rainier, Washington state and the symbol?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I don't know if this has any bearing on the symbol on your postcard but found it quite interesting. It's an explanation of the design on a bridge built in Yuma, Az completed in 1907.

http://postcards.corkrum.com/2010/12/postcard-from-yumaswastika-bridge.html

(Portion of the explanation)

"There were those in the U.S. government who thought the swastika would be a fitting symbol for the Bureau.  During its early years the United States Bureau of Reclamation used the swastika for its symbol. The swastikas on Laguna Dam are a legacy of that period. The Bureau also designed a Reclamation flag with a large swastika at its center with the U S R S letters in the four corners."

One sold on Ebay back in January for $4.25.

One here for $6.50  http://www.nyecreek.com/topics/goodluck.htm

Found a few that sold for $9.50 and $8.00 in 2002 and 2007.

Here's a bit of information about Washington using the swastika and pottery....etc.
