7 Piece Japanese(?) Nut Set
« on: May 07, 2012, 09:39:44 am »
This is my 7 piece (1 large bowl, 6 small) nut set that I bought at an estate sale for I believe $15.00-$20.00. I probably shouldn't have bought as I knew absolutely nothing about it! I didn't even know it was a nut set haha. I just really liked it and I think since I didn't pay much I'm alright. You should buy what you like, right?  ;)

Anyway, I've tried to do some research, but I can't seem to find a nut set quite like this one. Is it porcelain maybe? Or lustreware? I'm pretty sure it's hand painted because the image in each small bowl varies a little. It has lot's of gold detailing and each piece is marked on the bottom. The marks look like they may be a little different, but it's hard for me to tell since it's written in what I think is Japanese...Maybe Kanji  ??? (see photos).

I have a few more photos to follow in a reply and I'd love to know more about this set.

Curious to know who made it and when, and also the value if anyone knows. If not, any ideas on where to go to find info?

Thanks all!

More photos...

Also I did find this today:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Antique-Japanese-Hand-Painted-SATSUMA-NUT-DISH-OPEN-SALT-SET-w-Moriage-Signed-/180867885983?pt=Asian_Antiques&hash=item2a1c90eb9f#ht_944wt_1163

Not really any info and I don't know if that price is accurate as it's on eBay

Hm. Odd. I will try uploading smaller ones later tonight. Maybe they're too large.

Thanks guys. I just can't find out a single thing about them. It's driving me nuts! >:(

Found this set today too. The painting style is quite different and it doesn't have the main (large) bowl, but they're the same shape. The bottoms are just marked "JAPAN" though...

I hate to keep posting on my own topic but I just found this site:

http://www.gbouvier.com/library.htm

I think these are called Kutani ware. I'm thinking it may be one of the unknown "generic" marks.  ???  Not all that helpful though. I'm taking a break from searching, it's making my head hurt haha.

Very pretty set! The style of this set with the orange edge and ladies in komonos looks like Geisha Girl ware. When doing a search for "Geisha Girl ware" (in looking for information about similar pieces I have) not only does Geisha Girl Ware (porcelain) come up but also I found references to Kutani and Satsuma. I lost the page where I found that this style of design was referred to by more than one name but did get a nice page of information here:

http://www.gotheborg.com/glossary/?http://www.gotheborg.com/glossary/geisha_girl.shtml

At the top of this page you can search the site for "kutani" and "satsuma" to perhaps find more information about the design.

Also found a mark that looks very similar to your set (go to "Giokusei, Seto/Nagoya" about halfway down the page):

http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/index_jap_marks.htm?http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/20thcenturyjapan.shtml

I couldn't find any information on value pricing though. Maybe in your search you can find leads to someone who knows more. Seems to be difficult to find information on this style. Love the look of it and wish I had a collection of it. :)

Thanks a bunch!

I'll have to come back to look more closely at the links but they look like they'll be very helpful. I wish I could delve into it right now, but it's a busy bee kind of day for me :P

Yes, it's been really difficult for me to find info on this stuff! I really love this set and I appreciate all the help I can get!
