Straight razor won`t fit in this I don`t think !! The two divisions should have two or three grooves in each one and that keeps the brush elevated and keeps water away from the toothbrush after it is rinsed and allows it to dry !!  They were much smaller back then I assume !! You need to see how long this mark was used !!  I think standard toothbrushes came into common use around 1900 !!  But will check on that !!

Hi Mart,

It appears this mark was used between 1841 and 1860.

It looks as though the center spot would be for the brush although there are 3 separate areas that are kind of "scalloped" but not grooves.

Would love to list this but have no idea where to start to value it.

Bonnie

Scallops is what I am talking about,, indentations !!  Get a couple of toothbrushes , the plain flat handled ones at the dollar store and lay them in it !!

I am going to look to see what I have because mine are not the flat handled and they don't fit   :o  In the meantime I did do some research as well and you are right about the time toothbrushes were common household items.  Well wondering then if that could mean something this old would have been owned by wealthier families?  Hmmmm food for thought.

I have no clue what to list this at.

Ok finally getting back to this and yes I tried the plain flat sided toothbrushes and it would definitely hold 3 of them.  Of course I didn't research what toothbrushes from this time period would measure or look like.  I suppose I could do that as well   :-\

In the meantime, does anyone have any further opinions on what I should list this at?  Wondering if everyone thinks the #30 to $40 range.

Thanks for the help everyone - always appreciated!!   ;D

You can try at that but the market is so slow now, if it doesn`t sell, try relisting at $20. !!  People are just not spending much that I have seen !!

Yes I am not having any luck there either - small items selling occasionally but a lot of re-listing.  Anyone having better luck on any other site?
