Bought this carved stone bird from an antique fair in England. No idea about the type of stone or where did it come from. From the look of the bird l got this feeling that it came from South or Latin America. Stone bird is 4inch high and 8 inch long. Black patches on the surface are dirt but could not remove. I just used a damped cloth to clean it all over but without use brute force.
Any info will be most welcomed.

When you touch it,what in your opinion does it feel like,...the reason i ask,..it might be soap stone...are there any marks on the base...

There is no marking on the base or anywhere.  It is cold to the touch and heavy. The orange patches are part of the stone. l thougt soap stone is  single colour. There are fracture lines around its neck and foot.

Soap stone comes in various colours.it can be green,brown,,with veins of grey/white...these fractures may indicate that it could be a type of quartz or agate...

Looks like a representation of a Quoetzel (sp?), a central American bird from Costa Rica. The style looks Mayan.

Just throwing some suggestions out there.

That is what l thought ghopper. There is a stone object on ebay from Costa Rica which has made from similar type of stone. l can't link it but under the description of:
