Large wooden cabinet ?
« on: September 01, 2012, 07:43:30 pm »
Can anyone help me identify what exactly this is? It was in our house when my grandfather bought it in the 50s, and the house was originally built in the 20s. I want to sell it possibly, but don't really know how to describe it, or what to call it when searching for values. It's about 6.5 ft. tall and SOLID. Definitely can't move it easily! Any ideas on what it is called, or what the value might be (or where to go to find the value) are appreciated!!

Thank you!

And it doesn't appear as if it was ever a built-in (and removed to be used as a closet). Sides are all intact, and the back appears to be all intact, not like it was torn out of a wall or anything. The shelves on the inside are not finished like the outside, they are much more rough.

As nicely built as it is I am betting it could have been for food items - jams/preserves, pickling items.  Know most homes had these in the earlier part of 1900's to 1970's in my neck of the wood growing up!
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Looks like a utility cabinet.

looks like a simple country pantry to me !!  like KC said back then everyone canned and preserved food !! probably from 40`s or so !!  houses were built with minimal cabinets since we didn`t have so much stuff back then !!

Are you able to post a close up picture of that hardware on the front? That knob might help it date it a little better.

With the extra-wide board on the left side, me thinks it was originally a "built-in" cabinet.

When I look at the picture ..... it looks like it should be a "corner" cabinet. ??? ??? ???
