Small footstool.......approx. age?
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:58:25 am »
Now that I've gotten a start on cleaning out a bedroom downstairs I can finally get to work on some of my long waiting projects. In the meantime, I found this at my (where else) fav. thrift shop.  I thought it would look fairly good with my Eastlake style rocker.

16" X 8 1/2" and 5 1/2" high (excluding padding)

I can find no sign of screws/nails so assuming it is glued. Hoping the top isn't also.  Base of the top appears to be plywood, don't know if is a replacement or original.

I'm thinking 50's or before ??  I don't know as there was much call/use for such a small and 'ladylike' style any later on.

Any opinions?

I have heard them referred to as gout stools because the person who suffered from the pain could keep the foot of the floor. It is severe at times and keeping the foot elevated helps a little. Been there.

I have two requirements in life (besides pepsi and cigs  ;) ) and that is I MUST have a rocker and footstool. My eastlake is very low so requires an equally matched stool and this height is perfect. Age wise they are far apart but once cleaned up and recovered they should be ok together.

Thanks mart, knew it wasn't 'old' but seemed to be inline with late 40's early 50's furniture I grew up with.

Foot stool from mid 90's.

Gout stools were usually much more unique, typically padded and adjustable!  Gorgeous pieces in their own right.
