Need Help determining value of 13th century Chinese hand-scroll
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:56:18 am »
Hello,

I had recently come across a Chinese hand scroll that was given to me by my Chinese professor.  I have done some research and I believe it to have come from the National Palace Museum in Twain, China.  The Museum at one point sold them in their gift shop.  It is a remaking of the original scroll that was made during the 13th century for the ming dynasty.    Made by ch'iu ying during the MING dynasty

I have attached several photos of the actual scroll.

If any one knows more information or the value of this scroll please contact me,
thank you!

Really can't tell much from your photos but if the museum sold them in their gift shop it must be a print and not hand done, and if from a gift shop they must have sold several. Can't imagine it holds much value but  lets see what the others think.

I think they were limited to very few in the museum and only sold for a very short time because they had 5 artists working on the reprint and there are a few listed on ebay now in the 200-300 dollar range and if you were to buy them in the gift shop today, again a different painting it would run you between 300-600 dollars it seems

It looks as if you already have the value.

First of all no one said there were hundreds made  and if the piece is not numbered as to how many were made & sold then you can by no means be sure there were not hundreds made. Ok I am confused  ???  you said in your last post "they had 5 artists working on the reprint" Then you said "if you were to buy them in the gift shop today, again a different painting it would run you between 300-600 dollars it seems"  Is it a reprint or a painting??  Also the photos you supplied are of no help as they are upsidedown and toooooo small to show any detail.  yes mart the link to the ones on ebay would be great to see as I am very confused.

Ok to clarify I am looking for someone who deals and knows about these specific hand scrolls.  This scroll is a reprinting of the original work done in the 13th century;  The museum had 5 artist working on the reprint,  There are scrolls similar but not the same on ebay and there are scrolls similar but not the same in the museum gift store, I am inquiring about my specific model the EASTERN GROVE.

IT is a reprint of the original painting.

Even though I find you incredibly rude and condescending I will use the good manners I was raised with and give you some advice, Take it or leave it. 1 search and contact a expert in 13th century Chinese hand-scroll this is a very specialized field and will cost you $$$$  2 if you wish not to spend any money to get "someone who actually KNOWS what there talking about not just a speculator" send your photos to Christie's auction house for an auction estimate  I will even be kind enough to give you the link  https://www.christies.com/services/auction-estimates/
