Book 1844 Perilous Adventures by Davenport
« on: October 06, 2012, 01:38:06 pm »
Hello All! I am back with another question. (As I have probaby said before, this is the most wonderful forum I have ever ran across).
Anyway, we went to an Antique Store that is having a large sale. I got this book for about $15.00. I wondered if I got a good deal or not. I know that condition is everything but I was hoping what I paid for it was worth it. (on a side note I was thinking of putting it with my antique school desk. I don't know though, I may not keep it).  Anyway it says: The Family Library N.o. 159 Perilous Adventurs by Davenport (it is R.A. Davenport). The year of the book is 1944.

Here are a few photos of it:

I love auctions/antique stores! I love old photos & books. This is the best group on the internet. :) I try to get on often, but I've had 2 brain surgeries & a back surgery. The pain is awful so I don't get on as often as I would like. It doesn't take away my love of old stuff.

p.s. I did realize how stupid I am just now. I bought a very pretty jar of sorts at the same time. It is silver colored and had a type of hallmark on the bottom. They said it is Sterling Silver (where I bought it) and well....I bought into that.  Boy oh boy, am I dumb! It is very much so not sterling silver. It is silver plated! I typed in the letters on the bottom and the hallmark is very very close to EG Webster & Sons (very close, almost exact except 2 of the letters are not quite what is on the internet, but I am sure it is them because of the design). I believe I paid way too much for that item (they had it marked 45 dollars). Anyway, chances are that I probably overpaid for that book too.

You'll have to post pictures of the Webster jar, but let's hope that you didn't overpay.

The book, of course, is 1844, not 1944. You've got some foxing going on, but the book doesn't look bad at all and I don't think you overpaid. As a sidenote, you should put the word "davenport" into E-Bay and search under antiques. The little captain's desks you'll see are also called davenports, supposedly named after an 18th century English sea captain of that name who invented them for use on ships. Whether the story is apocryphal or not, your book would look particuarly good - and apt - displayed on a davenport desk.

P.S. Don't beat yourself up for overpaying, which I'm not yet convinced you've done in any case. Live and learn. It's a jungle out there! :D

Pictures would help on the silverplate piece. But you may not have overpaid. Sterling silver would have cost a great deal more.
Take every price I say with a grain of salt...

Thank you so much for the information! Here are some pictures of the Webster item. It is missing the lid (from the looks of it, it should have a lid of some sort. I know this is late 1800's, just not sure of the year or anything. Also, I ended up paying $20.00 for it. They swore it was sterling silver and were just selling discounted because of them going out of business and we are good customers, ha ha. it's probably worth 5 or 10. :

I just noticed after we cleaned it up more, that it has a scratched in letter & number under or rather above the EGW&S. It is either E21 or 123 (depends on which way you read it. Not sure what that is supposed to mean. I had to really hold it up in the light to see it.
