20" x 24" Twelfth Station of the Cross
« on: December 19, 2012, 02:07:12 pm »
I purchased this 20" x 24" picture recently at an estate auction.  It is stamped Chicago Portrait Company, Chicago, IL.  To me it looks like an oil painting, but I can find no signature on it (unless it's underneath the frame).  I know the Chicago Portrait Company went out of business some years back.  It looks like the picture had some wear prior to being framed.  Anyone have any insite at all on this picture?

It is behind glass.  The reason I say it looks like an oil painting is because you can kind of tell it's on canvas.  I've tried to add a picture that kind of shows almost the paint cracking on the canvas.  At least that's kind of the impression I get.

It looks a lot like one of the Gustave Dore bible illustrations but I looked at as many as I could find on line and could not find that one. He did a couple of hundred and they were reproduced for two centuries. They were engravings from paintings. I have one from around 1890 which is a steel engraving. This looks like a print. See link

Canvas would not be behind glass !!  May be an etching and the lines from that are what you are seeing !!
