Unidentified pottery
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:16:37 am »
Hello,

I've been collecting the following range of pottery, but no seller has been able to provide any concrete information about it. It has no obvious factory mark, but there are numerous examples, all with similar patterns. It is possibly Bavarian or Hungarian and from the later nineteenth century, but no one knows for sure. I'd be grateful for any information people can provide!

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the response!

Here are three random bases. All of them have similar sets of numbers, of varying clarity. They also have very light numbers scratched into them, as you might be able to make out on one of the photos.

Thanks again.

Here is one more I've found, with a unique number embossed (think that's the right word!) into the pottery itself and a roman numeral beneath.

Well,, I thought this might be mid century pottery and I am pretty sure thats correct !!  If you notice the two digit numbers run from 59 to 71 which I think would be the year made !! The unglazed bottoms are the earlier ones and the later have glazed bottoms as most of the potteries were doing !!   Independent decorators would have used this type of markings !! Sometimes the potteries would hire the decorators and they would have a number that indicated which one painted it !! They were normally paid according to how many they painted or decorated if transferware was used !!  Let me look around a bit,,!!

Thanks, any definite info you find is gratefully received! By mid century you mean mid 19th, right? They must have been pretty popular, as examples of this range turn up quite frequently at fairs.
