Antique Rocker???
« on: January 07, 2013, 06:41:18 am »
Hi all!!  First post here, hopefully many more to come!  :)

I came across this when I bought an abandoned storage locker the other day.  I've never seen anything like it, and I've just spent an hour searching Google, Craigslist, and other various web sites, but I still can't find a chair that looks anything like it!

Can anybody tell me anything about it?  Is it old?  Is it rare?  Maybe even expensive??   :o

Thanks in advance for any info you might have!

Pics are pretty small, but going from what I see and memories of my own little rocker......I'm thinking early 50's, possibly late 40's. Can you take clearer larger shots of the underside to show construction and a close up of the springs? Mine had regular rockers but other than that they could have almost been twins. As more members pop in you'll get more feedback and opinions.

BTW, welcome to the forum BusDriverBen!  ;)

Thanks Sapphire!  The rocker is not with me right now, keeping it stored about half hour away from where I am.  I can get different pics later today though of any specific part that's asked of me.

Ok so.... Still doing my own searching, I've found it's called a "Cricket rocker".  And found a couple examples online...

This first one looks to be the exact same design as mine, the only difference is it only has 1 spring on each side, where mine has 2...
Plus somebody "Antiqued" it, which from my understanding is bad for resale of antiques???

the next one I found has 2 springs, but the design is completely different...

Any thoughts or comments on those?

Yes,  "antiqueing" is bad for value.

This "cricket" rocker is a type of platform rocker. Agree on the mid-20th century date and maple construction.

Sadly,  chairs are typically undervalued. Less than $100 for this one.

Ghopper is right !!  Last 20 years or so you couldn`t give them away much less get anyone to buy them !!  Seen a few different types on the roadside with a "FREE" sign on them !!  When Early American or Colonial was popular everyone had some type of it !!  Tell City was one of the most common mfrs !!

Just so you know,, there would have been a back cushion that tied to the ears at top and around the bottom !!  Some had loops at top and just tied at bottom !!  That back if no cushion is murder on your back !!
