Antique hammered metal mirror with Lion
« on: March 15, 2013, 03:19:02 pm »
Can anyone identify this mirror? I know it was purchased in 1924 at a store in Columbus, Ohio. It measures approx. 26" x 20". A number is stamped on the back of the "lions" (is it a lion? Dog?) head - 679. The back of the mirror is covered in a metal sheath. I took it off and unfortunately there wasn't a treasure map hidden back there. It weighs 20 lbs.

Thanks!

Are you here in the U.S. or in the UK ??  Looks like an English style !! Mass production was done even in 1920`s,, the number is likely the style number !!

Not necessarily imported as things are today !!  Many times these things came with families that moved here !!  Sometimes similar styles were made here !!   Where did you get it ??  Shop, flea market, inherited ??

My great-grandmother purchased it at a furniture store in Columbus, Ohio in 1924.

Mirrors did not necessarily folllow style so you can find them from different periods with all sort of decorative work !! There is a name for that animal,, kind of cross between dog and lion but will have to look tomorrow !!  Getting late here in Texas !! Will look tomorrow !! Nice mirror though and well worth keeping !!

Not seen a pediment like that on an English mirror. And it appears to be a dog, not a lion. Even has a collar.

To me it looks like it was purchased new in 1924, and doesn't date any earlier. Yes, that's a dog in the crest, kind of unusual.

Nice!

I can`t find that critter and its been so many years I sure can`t remember !! Saw similar back in late 70`s when all the antiques were shipped here from UK !!
No way to tell who made it unless it was marked with Mfr. !! This was a mid priced mirror that most families could buy at that time !! Better quality would likely have a beveled edge !! Did not see that on yours !! But if in good condition could bring $100. to $150. here in my area !!
