Who knows Arabic ?
« on: March 26, 2013, 02:28:29 am »
Once again on the forum because no reactions in Jan 2012 . Copper tinned plate and written in Arabic or ? Who is able to tell me about the used characters on this dish . Is it Arabic or Assyrian or ? And maybe some more useful info   if you have some knowledge about items like this would be welcome.

Thanks Ger

As you are in Nederland...i,m sure there must be middle eastern.shopkeepers, who may be able to help you,..i had a tray recently, and it had chinese on it, so i took it into my local chinese takeaway..and they were able to tell me what it said....if however this dish is not Arabic...then it may be in Urdu...but if its assyrian...then an Iraqi may be able to help...
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Thanks and done that already with somebody from Iran and Turkey but it's a difficult dish to read the say . The Iranian was the one who was able to read a bit . So must be from around there somewhere . But Assyrian would be nicer when it comes to date and value off the dish .

Off course Assyrian would be nicer...if it was, then it would mean that this dish has been floating around for nigh on 2500 years or more....as the Assyrian Empire was in existence long before JC,...therefore finding someone who can decipher Assyrian...well, ...good luck.....

Assyria, officially known as Aššur (Akkadian for Assyria), was a Semitic Akkadian kingdom, extant as a nation state from the late 25th or early–24th century BC to 605 BC.

You're a clever Scotsman and yes you are right but the way the words are written in Assyrian are similar on a dish that would be maybe from the fifteenth century . If it would be from that area off course . In 2007 I had a mail from Linda Komaroff in the States ( expert from big museum ) that it could be from there and fifteenth centure . but al based only on the pictures so she has never touched the dish off course . So reading the text would be better if completely translated off course and would bring more light to it's origin .

Second is the picture for the Scotsman and do you recognize the place ?

Yes I noticed it, there was a Flying School here, and an RFC airfield during the 1st world war, and then in 1939, they flew Spitfires from here...this is not a village anymore, it is a small town...
