Tiffany Sterling Mug - dated December 25, 1862
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:43:17 am »
I picked this up recently with a larger collection of coins and sterling silver.   This is a Tiffany mug (tankard) with a name and date engraved on the cup.  Name is "Agnes Gibson Muir" and date is "December 25th, 1862."   Not certain if this is a child's mug or other... it is approximately 5" tall.  Been looking online and haven't found many comps or similar mugs.  I have not attempted to clean this and therefore tarnished.  Any help and opinions are appreciated.   Pat

That's lovely. Worth much more than it's weight in silver

From what I,ve seen whilst searching..this mug..may be worth..four figures ..i can see from the base there is a little damage, but on the whole it looks to be very nice,..I,m just wondering if it could be Agnes,s Christening Cup..as Tiffany...did do them...i did see one with a name on it, and it is listed at over $2000,and another from the mid 1800,s at $3000+...
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Further research on this suggests that Agnes Gibson Muir was likely the daughter of William and Augusta Beardsley Muir. She died at age 11 in 1870 in NYC where the family lived. William was a stock broker in the city. Augusta was from an old Connecticut family. My guess would be that the mug was a Christmas gift to Agnes when she as 3-4 years old.

I don,t mean to be rude, but had you read all the posts given by members, you will have seen that Ippy had already found this detail, and that Agness WAS their daughter.."not likely to be"..

My apologies if my last post seemed rude.   I did see the Ippy post and appreciated the help.  My post was intended to add more information about Mr. Muir's occupation and family background.
