Whoa !!  Just thought about something !!  Is the stain from the top or side of the lip downward on outside ??  When making kraut or pickles the top would have been covered with a cloth !!  If the cloth was unbleached muslin,, and the liquid was too close to the top,,as it fermented it would have liquid seeping onto the cloth and dripping down,, unbleached muslin was commonly used since it is cheap and it is a darker color !!

Pictures would help alot on this one!

Mart you beat me to it on that one!

Peroxide works well!  Drench a cloth with it and place it over stain!

OK, I"ve tried vinegar, alcohol, and every other cleaner I could think of. I've got an inquiry into the Red Wing Society. I'll let you know what they say.

I will be interested to see what you find out. My husband has a Red Wing that needs cleaned and would like to know the same thing. :)
I love auctions/antique stores! I love old photos & books. This is the best group on the internet. :) I try to get on often, but I've had 2 brain surgeries & a back surgery. The pain is awful so I don't get on as often as I would like. It doesn't take away my love of old stuff.

Since most of the people that ask questions on this forum never come back for the answers, I thought I'd be the exception to the rule and do some follow-up.

I bought some Stoneware Stain Remover from the Maine Stoneware Man, who sells on E-Bay. This was on the recommendation of a member of the Red Wing Society, who has tried the product himself.

Yes, I know photos would be nice, but take it from me: this was only about drips on the outside of a crock. I literally tried everything I could think of with no results. I asked my friends here at antique.shop.com, and all of those suggestions amounted to nil. Nobody's fault, this was just simply beyond ordinary cleaners and elbow grease.

Apparently this stoneware cleaner is a proprietary formula, and all I can tell you is that contains acid. You'll need rubber gloves and a dust mask.

Long story short: After four baths and some scrubbing, the crock looks new. I hate to sound like a commercial, but this stuff is near-miraculous. If you've got vintage or antique crocks stained with minerals, rust, calcium, or the like then you need this if you care about their value and how they look.

'Nuff said.

Muriatic acid. Yeah, I thought of that too, having lived through 2 total home tuckpointings in the last few years.

That may be a part of it, but judging by the smell it seems as if there's something stronger in the mix.

I thought about trying CLR but was afraid it might be too strong !!  Evidently not !! Glad it came off for you !! I have several crocks but never had a stain that failed to come off with something I had here !!

HA, maybe it's like perfume, ..... the smell determines the price you had to pay.  ;D ;D

Iffen I was selling it on E-Bay I sure wouldn't want it being "sniff tested" to being cheapy muriatic acid.

The internet has "big ears", ya know.
