What is this pretty chair worth?
« on: June 12, 2013, 09:34:36 am »
Hello everyone!!! How is everybody doing??

I am so excited to be a member of this community. I have always loved history and antiques. I am a RN, but I am always trying to find cool, old stuff... so last week I bought this chair... the woman that sold it to me was Italian, and said that it belonged to her great grandmother, who used to live in Italy (In San Remo, border with France).
The chair is a Louis XIII style chair, but I am not sure how old. She said mid-late 1800's, but it could be older by the looks of it.

It is stuffed with horse hair and I believe also wool. The nails look very old. The fabric is not in great shape, as it is ripped at the top, as you can see. I want to restore it, but I want to keep the fabric intact. Some people told me (that are not experts) that it is not worth too much money the way it is now, and that I need new upholstery. Do I ruin the value of the chair by changing the fabric? Am I better off just fixing the top and leaving it that way? The fabric at the bottom was put on top of the original one, so the original one is still there, if I want to take that green one off, which is probably what I will do because I am curious to see how the original fabric looks.

How much do you guys think it is worth? And more importantly, how old do you guys think it is? :) ;)

Thank you so much for any input! Let me know if you would like to see more pics!

Agree that it's late 19th century.  Very nice!

I also agree that it would be worth more reupholstered. This chair is not so valuable in it's original state that you should leave the first upholstry on, which is at best incomplete in any case.

Reupholstered and with the wood finish cleaned (NOT stripped), the chair might bring $300 more or less in the U.S. midwest.

Kind of hard to determine age without seeing underneath and the nails and construction !!  I think with the scroll arms, straight topline and pad type foot (looks like, can`t see very well since pic is sideways and part is out of frame) that it might be later than that but some countries evolved with furniture differently !!  In either case agree with Ghopper,, needs recovering with a period correct fabric and a good cleaning !!

Nice chair and a keeper if cleaned/reupholsterd.

My neck-of-the-woods, if all done, $200 - $250.
