Antique Blanket/quilt??
« on: July 02, 2013, 05:55:14 pm »
Hello all! I found this blanket at a local antique store and am hoping it's a real antique. I paid $20 for it and was told it was from the 1890's and is victorian. I want to trust the lady but I'm not sure if she's just a good sales woman. Please help me date it! There are no tags or markings that I can find and when I google it everyone say's its a 'quilt' but I don't know. Thanks a bunch!

that, is a quilt....there is no doubt about it....see my link...to hundreds of them....now for the interesting bit....from where i,m sitting..if there are no tags on this, then the only way, that you are going to be able to tell if it is late 1800,s/early 1900,s...is by the stitching,...if it can be verified as coming from that era...then it could be worth high end  $$$....but even if it is,nt Victorian....and it turns out to be late 1920,s/30,s,...its still worth a good bit more than $20.....think more like $150+.....now the worst case scenario....if it was made last week, in some back street, shop....its still worth more than you paid for it......

Try a web search for ..... Victorian bedspread or quilted bedspreads.

Here are new ones offered by Ikea ....

we have one here that belonged to Avril,s grandmother....its filled with eiderdown...the one you have...looks a bit flat...but i can still see the segments....you can check,to see if its feather filled...just by touch....if it is, then,...be happy with it....if however its polyester....then.. ..its modern....

Poly-fill would be very lightweight depending on size might be considered a coverlet !!

Nice! You can't go wrong with a $20 investment. Quilts are very hard to price. Some go for hundreds, others next to nothing. The more detailed and elaborate patchwork quilts can go for quite a lot.

Absolutely...the stitching does appear to be pretty perfect like it was done from a machine.. Which makes me doubt that it is from 1890. Also, I was asking around at work today and someone said if it was really "Satin silk" that it would have fallen apart by now...

if  you think they did,nt have sewing machines in the 1890,s.....well they did,.....personally i think this quilt dates from around the early 20,s/30,s,i can remember my gran having one....and it was feather filled....as for the satin/silk,not lasting....well it does last, it would all depend on how it was stored.....and as TOTSS...says...its a good $20..investment....

The shiny material (versus cotton) makes me think 1900's.  Machine stitched.

What is the size of this?

By satin silk or you referring to sateen ??  Lighter weight , not as stiff as satin but same look ??

That would date it late 30`s or 40`s if it is !!  This looks very small,, more like a lap quilt !!

agree with Mart, regarding size....but would say, it might have been used on a childs cot....these were common in the 20,2/30.s/40.s....but still a good buy....far better than what you,d get for the same  money out of Ikea.........who by the way....get most of their goods from Sweat Shops in Pakistan/India, or Vietnam....
