Green Teddy Bear
« on: July 12, 2013, 12:06:33 pm »
This is a long shot , I'm hoping we have some bear specialists among us.
Is anybody able to ID this bear?

More info:

• The label on his back reads:
On the outside: "My old teddy" (Possibly written on afterwards)
On the inside: "No 1     2.8.95 "

• It appears to be filled with beans or sand

• Has a hump on his upper back similar to Steiff (But no signs of ear tag/hole)

• Scarf most probably a later addition

Thankyou!

Believe it or not Mart, I live 2 1/2+ hours from my son (who is give or take a little bit from you) and it takes 4 days to a week for the mail to get to him!  LOL

Tap gently on the eyes with your own front teeth to see if they are glass or plastic. I'm guessing with a name like "My Old Teddy" that this would be a reproduction. In the up close picture of the tag, the sheen on the fibers looks like a synthetic to me rather than mohair which is natural goat. Part the hair and look at the weave of the body. That should give you some sense of age or lack of it. Here is an article with more tips on identification:

This is difficult. The long paw pads and turned out feet along with the hump are Steiff characteristics. As Tales said the mohair does look a little synthetic but without seeing it makes it difficult. The eyes on some of the early ones were shoe buttons. My wife has a very early Steiff from 1907 and the eyes are shoe buttons. On hers the hair is all gone like her husband. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't Fuzzy was he? My gut feeling is that this is an early Steiff bear with a label attached later.
