ROBINSON & LEADBEATER parian bust of queen Victoria
« on: August 14, 2013, 09:38:54 pm »
Picked this little statue up at a resale shop.
Wasn't very familiar with the R & L mark. But I liked it and took it home.
And I noticed there was alot of items from the stoke on Trent area. Alot of little museum type items and pitchers and and such all about 2-3 inched high. Had no clue about the age on these. Bought 5 and will post on another topic about these.

R & L.  1865-1924

The R & L mark in the oval line around used 1885 on. LTD used on their items after 1905. So I think i would be right in saying this is between 1897 and 1905??  Queen Victoria's reign started in 1837.
Robinson and Leadbeater made several varieties of this bust.
I noticed alot of scalloped marks on this one.  Does anyone know if this was intentional or if this piece has aquired damage?
Any thoughts on this piece?
It is 7 1/2 inches high.
Thank you,
sandfisher

Hard to say if its damage or not !!  They are everywhere aren`t they ?? Feeling that most are in the bust naturally but see a couple that may be chips !!

The writing looks wrong, as does the base and generally appearance. There seems to have been an influx of these recently on Ebay which would also worry me.

I think you both might be right.
Modern reproduction?.
Now that I am paying attention to detail, I do believe I see signs of casting.
And Before I didn't think too much of it, but the bottom is filled.
I can post a picture of the bottom tomorrow. Right now the battery on my camera recharging.

Can you pinpoint what in the writing looks wrong? Wether real or not real, I like to research and learn as much as I can. Half the reason I buy these things. It's about the research and identification.
Thank you,

looking at the writing and the marks,..first the writing...herreign. ..looks like all one word..when it should have been two...her reign....the marks look like air bubbles when the casting was made....a hot pin test would verify..if it is resin.....
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Totally agree Bigwull!

Interesting piece!
