what is BUTTERSCOTCH JADE?
« on: October 22, 2013, 02:18:46 pm »
Hi,

on ebay, some times I saw items with title BUTTERSCOTCH JADE.
For example, this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VTG-STEAMPUNK-URBAN-GYPSY-PRINCESS-ADJUSTABLE-70s-BUTTERSCOTCH-JADE-GARNET-RING-/321222242283?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aca566feb

I become quite curious on what is BUTTERSCOTCH JADE, but didn't find much information. Is BUTTERSCOTCH JADE just a description someone use to describe the colour or actually there is a type of jade called "BUTTERSCOTCH JADE" or is it some kind of other material( so not real jade)?

Many Thanks

Without really knowing for sure, I'd say it is just a catchy name for "Yellow Jadeite".

As far as I know, and I am not a gemologist, there is no Butterscotch Jade !!  There are various colors and shades of jade but I have never heard of butterscotch !!  But,, when people sell on ebay,,there are many descriptions no one has ever heard of !!  The reason they use all these terms is varied but its usually to make people think they are getting something rare and then it sells above dime store jewelry prices !!  They use every word they can think of in the title because that's how the search brings it up !!  Personal opinion is that's the ugliest ring I have ever seen and its just an adjustable, probably Chinese cheapie !!  Yet $87.88 and $35.00 shipping ?? They are making a killing if anyone buys these things !!

you,ve never heard of Butterscotch....Mmm!!...

Butterscotch is a type of confectionery whose primary ingredients are brown sugar and butter, although other ingredients such as corn syrup, cream, vanilla, and salt are part of some recipes
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Love butterscotch   :D  I'm going with a fancy name for a yellow jade.  Not sure that picture is real jade.  Looks like glass.  Here is a yellow jade..  http://www.joaniesgifts.co.uk/image/cache/data/jewellery/yellow-jade-chinese-coin-necklace-closeup-500x500.JPG

I ran across an asian statuette in the 1960's (was it out around Saragosa ?) , claimed to be 'butterscotch jade' by the auctioneer .... it was actually realgar ( a natural form of arsenic ) which is quite toxic , especially when exposed to light !!

I'm not sayin' that the item posted  about is  the same mat'l , though ...

FYI ...

The Penn Museum (University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archeology & Anthropology) in Philadelphia , Pa. has got a Taoist statue carved from realgar , no longer on display , currently stored in total darkness !
