Blue & white turkey plates
« on: October 25, 2013, 12:13:19 pm »
Mom used to use these for Thanksgiving. They're about 10" diameter, no marks, but it looks like some of the blue from the top design bled through to the undersides of the plate in spots. There are 11 of them, but one has a chip on the edge. Estimate age and value. Thanks.

Beautiful plates. But no mark on the back side, huh?

Now I will call them "blue and white", others will call them "flow blue".

But the real "flow blue", in my opinion, are the ones where the "blue" in the pattern flows or bleeds. See image below.

The blue on the backside of yours is probably due to the mishandeling when the pattern was being applied.

Here a pic of the underside of one plate showing that it has no marks and the stipples of blue.

I also have this bowl in which the pattern is more "fuzzy" like the photo you posted, cougar. It does have a mark, not on the bottom, but on the side. I don't suppose you can determine what mark it is.

Oh my, that mark is so floblued it would be tuff to figure out.

It does look like a "crown" mark though .... with the "crown" being the blue "blob" in the center of the mark.

Similar to this "mark", to wit:

And here is a platter with similar pattern and shape of your bowl.

http://thevintagevillage.com/photo/antique-flow-blue-platter-waldorf-new-wharf-pottery

And they say this about the "mark" on  it, to wit:

"The back mark with the Stafford Knot is shown and dates this piece to c.1892"

So, there's a few clues to maybe help you chase down the "mark" on you bowl.

Agree about the plates being blue n white.  The last definitely would be referred to as flow blue!

Beautiful pieces!!!!!!!!  I would be privileged to eat off of them!

It seems bugwull doesn't share your opinions. I was looking for flow blue patterns made by New Wharf and I found this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-WHARF-POTTERY-BOWL-ENGLAND-WALDORF-PATTERN-FLOW-BLUE-BOWL-ESTATE-/251360249015?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a863d04b7
It looks like the same pattern in my bowl, but less "flowy". Apparently the pattern is named "Waldorf".

Here is a price from Kovel's Web site, although it's almost 20 years out of date. Average asking eBay prices for this pattern bowl averages $50.
