Value of ornate bench?
« on: December 15, 2013, 07:19:14 pm »
Hello,

I receive this bench as a gift from my dad several years ago from his estate sale during his divorce (don't ask). Anyway, I have no attachment to the bench and have since lost space to justify having such an ornate object in our home that we don't use. I have looked online and talked to some local antique dealers and have had no real luck on pricing the item. There are no obvious markings or tags and I know that it has been in our family for at least the last 25 years. If anyone could assist me I would appreciate it!

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

That is beautiful.  Mart is the furniture expert so she can give you the best idea of value but I would think with the exceptional carving and condition it would be the very high end of value.  Where are you located?  That can make a difference in price.

That's what I am thinking too,Ipcress !!  But would help if the pic size can be scaled down to about 2000kb and take another shot same as this and one of the bottom of the seat, if there is no dust cover, and let me look at it tomorrow !! Would help to see how its made !!  Is there any family history about the bench ?? Just whatever the family was told about it if they purchased it from someone else,,or how it came to be in the family !!

Agree with whats been said regarding age,....can,t agree that its beautiful....think Ice must be looking through rose tinted specs....if not then i want some of what she,s been on, ;D
back to the "bench"...the pic opens very well.and goes in close....carving is ok....not hand done,if i was to have a guess, i,d say it came from Indonesia ..it has that look,....value ..over here,....I could see this selling ..only to someone with a guide dog ....or me....for next to nothing...and i,d chop it up....
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Thanks for the help.  I am not really sure of the age.  I know it has been in my family for 25 years, but my parents picked it up at an auction when I was a kid.  I'm not sure how I missed it but I did find writing underneath that says "Mahoni=Kopi"  I did an internet search and came up with nothing.  I am not sure if it is worth much, I just wanted to check it out.  Thanks again for any and all help.  I'll try and post a couple more pictures.

It looks (and sounds from the name Mahoni) as if Indonesia was the source originally. The carved "eagle" makes me believe it was made for the American market.

Gquinones,

I found these websites using "Mahoni-Kopi" on Google search and then images:

http://wooden-furniture-ind.itrademarket.com/group+143833/20.html
http://java-excellent.indonetwork.co.id/group+164657/20.html

You might want to email them your pics. Maybe they can give you further info.

Isn't Mahoni-Kopi just " coffee mahogany " for the colour ?

Bigwull, Rauville , Ipcress and Dogaman  have this covered !!  Have been waiting for more info !!  Almost every time you find one of these over-carved , mahogany pieces they are usually from Mfrs. in Indonesia !!

Reproduction piece.  The color is just "off" from real mahogany on these reproduction pieces to those that view furniture.

Still a nice piece!
