I have been looking but can't figure out what period it is.  Does anyone know?

The first two marks ( top and bottom right ) indicate the Qing period - you'll see them on Qianlong period pieces for example. The later marks however indicate it's a later piece made in the style of.
Fairly recent, i think.

Looks like it's trying to imitate cinnabar but has been painted / lacquered.

What does it look like inside ?

I found something you can compare to

http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/11242972_cinnabar-lacquer-box
This went for $850 - a very good price i think !

The mark is Guangxu period 1871-1908, which is coming to the end of the Qing dynasty.
You'll see the marks are similar to yours except top left. It's there where yours indicates it's later.

I'll check a book tomorrow for that mark.

Might be cinnabar and it's just the light / flash that's making me think it's just plain red lacquer.
