Any ideas regarding value of these?
« on: February 05, 2014, 09:55:27 pm »
Hi All,

I am just at my grandfathers and he just pulled out the following antiques and we were wondering of they are worth anything?

1. Ice skates (both left and right skate with adjustment tools attached) with following information engraved
"Patent
V.J.P.B.jr
23.4.1885
Links
24

C.F. KUNDE
DRESDEND
PRAGERSTRASSE

2. Bronze  light holder with lion heads (3) and stems/flowers around the top. No engraving that we can see. Had plaster in top to hold light (candle?) in place.

3. Silver plated 'Butter cooler'

Please find attached one picture of each.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help. Look forward to your posts.

Cheers,

Guy

" light holder " ? You mean candles ?

There should be a mark of some description on the base

On the underside of the silver (I am betting silverplate) holder there should me a hallmark as to who made it.  Please make a picture of it and post it here as well as describe what it says.  That will help with value.  This is what is known as a "silver mechanical butter holder".  Depending on who made it, it can be worth a bit!!

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Thanks for your reply. Please find attached the requested picture. It reads:
SIMPSON.HALL.MILLER & CO
QUADRUPLE PLATE
176

Hope this provides the info you are after to be able to provide further insight into an approximate value.

Cheers,

Guy

The ice skates are fairly common. Many northern men, women and kids had a pair. Women could clamp to their high button shoes and skate in their Victorian attire. A far modest cry form the short skating outfits today. Not much monetary value but they make a great decoration hanging by the door.
