Identifying Asian Notched Porcelain cobalt box
« on: February 10, 2014, 12:48:32 pm »
I am selling items from my friend's sister estate. She lived in Japan and Turkey. This cobalt blue box with lift off lid has an opening  or notch on the end with a corresponding notch on the lid. There is also an Asian mark on the base.  It measures 5 3/4"x 3 1/4" and is 2 1/4" deep. Anyone know what it is used for and where it comes from. Thanks

I really am more interested in what it would be used for, there has to be a reason that it has an opening or notch in the lid and base.

I think it is a Kana rectangular serving dish, for Japanese  food, the slot in the end is for the chopsticks.

A serving dish for fish works for me.  The slot for the chopsticks makes sense. Thanks for the help. Chris

This reminds me of a wasabi or condiment serving dish.  The hole is for a spoon or serving piece!
