Old tiles
« on: April 13, 2014, 12:18:49 pm »
Dear all,

I have three tiles and I don't know anything about it.
The tiles are bubbled/uneven and 23 cm x 16 cm (9 inch x 6,5 inch).
They are unmarked I think, there is someting stucked.
Does anyone know more about the age, decor???

Greetings,
Liopleurodon

Hi, these are from Iran. They are often dated to the 19th c, but my feeling is they are vintage at best, maybe sold as souvenirs, as the quality of real Qajar tiles of the 19th c is much better. Are there any traces visible for these having actually been attached to a wall?

Hi Mat,

Thank you, I find it now on the internet.
They are persians. I found the same thype on ebay. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ANTIQUE-PERSIAN-IRAN-ISLAMIC-FALCONER-MOLDED-RELIEF-ART-POTTERY-TILE-MAJOLICA-/301143961142)
I think it is old. I made a picture that shows the 'bubbles'.

Dear Mart,
I do not think you can say that it is new based on one hanger.  The hangers are stuck/glued on a rag, what also is stucked/glued on the tile. They are not included in the tile. I got them from a flea market. So the hanger can be made by a person himself.
Thanks for the comment, I can search further. I am convinced that they are older than vintage/new.

Wish you are right, as I have one like that myself, but I have my doubts... ;)

Dear Mat, Do you also doubt because of the hanger or the quality?
I can’t see big differences between my tiles and qajar tiles from the internet... Do you?
The side shows old traces and is discolored.

Liopleurodon, you are right that the hanger may have been attached by someone later, not by the maker. But what makes me doubt that these are really from 19th c is mostly the quality of the painting.  The 19thc c Qajar tiles come from the walls of wealthy Persian's homes or even palaces and they are made with very nice detail in the paintings, often the figures are also in relief. Also I have never seen traces of actual use as an architectural element (like traced of mortar) on pieces like yours and mine. Also tiles, when taken from the wall, usually get damaged in some way. I can't see that on your pieces. That is why I do not think they are that old, but, as I said already, I hope you are right and not me...

Mat,
Thank you for explain it.
At the back is damage but there is a rag glued on it. I can put it of and then I see the “rough” relief at the back. What you see on the picture (the back of the tile) is the rag. The tiles are also in rleief, as you can see in the fifth and sixth picture. But I know, it is difficult to get it clear on the picture.
I will compare the paintings with internet pictures.
