What is this wood block for?
« on: April 26, 2014, 08:34:34 am »
Hi,
I got this wood piece in a box lot and don't know what it is.

It is a solid piece of wood that measures 6 3/4" X 2 3/4" X 1 3/4".  There are a set of 2 holes on either end that go through the piece.  The slots go down into the the wood 2 1/2".  There is one on either side!  It seems to me that it would be used for winding?!

Thanks for any help.

Jeanne

Completely wild guess guess but it looks like part of a wooden xylophone or whatever you would call such an instrument. Have you tried striking it with a mallet yet? :D

Hi there and welcome to the group, joemg311 !! You know,, you may be right !! The cavity on the side would determine the tone and the holes would be for attaching to a base of some sort !!  Sure as shootin` I didn`t know about it !!

Thanks! Welp If you google image search "wood block" you will see newer things similar with the same holes. I remember being forced to play something similar in jr high music class.

The funny part...when i searched this out, it really is called a "wood block" in the music world!  Wow, learning new things on here.

Thanks joemg311!
