These were purchased at an estate sale.  I'm not sure what this set of dishes would be used for with the individual dipping sauce bowls?  There are 3 larges bowl like plates with 6 individual small dipping bowls.  As I'm not an expert I've come to the experts again for help in identifying these dishes.  They appear to be hand made and hand painted with a stork design and are marked on the back made in Japan.  Does anyone have any idea of their age, what this would be used for and possibly their value.  Thank you

Cool little set of servingware , agreeneyes .

Kinda doubt that they were made for sushi , as sushi is traditionally served in/on shallow , flat-ish dishes .
They'd very well work as sushi serving-ware , though , with sm bowls for wasabi , pickled ginger & etc .

They could certainly be rice bowls , or ones for serving side-dishes , such as daikon & etc . , with the smaller ones used for condiments/toppings like sesame seeds , bonito flakes  & such .

Your little set looks like they were hand-formed on a die/pattern block & are hand painted .

From their gen'l 'look' I'd have to guess 1980's or so , maybe as old as 1970's , as far as I can tell .

70`s and 80`s is when the noodle craze started here !! Since it marked Made in Japan, we know its an import !! I would guess its a noodle set !! Large one for serving next size for each person and the smaller ones for condiments/add-ons like Fancy said !!

The 3 larger bowls are the same size.  I just showed one close up so you could see the detail of the stork design better.  There are only 3 large bowls and 6 small bowls.  Appreciate all of the information and comments, thank you

Hi, the "stork" is supposed to be a crane... ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-crowned_crane;)
