Sideboard Help!
« on: October 02, 2014, 10:55:26 am »
I was wondering if anyone could give me information on the sideboard pictured. Sorry for the quality of photos. I saw this sideboard at the Antique Pavilion in Houston and really liked it. We were in the middle of renovations so I didn't purchase it and now I'm kicking myself because I finally tracked down the seller and it has been sold. She said it was Dutch but that's all she really knew. I've been online searching and haven't found anything similar. Any tips on how I can find something similar or if anyone has something similar they would be willing to sell would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!

I have tried ebay and craigslist, so far nothing but I'll keep searching. I should have taken the time to take better photos, I'velearned my lesson. Thank you for the help!

If I am seeing this correctly, there are 4 greenmen on this piece.

I can't say that I normally see a Greenman used in Danish furniture!  I would think, by looks, that this is a late 1800's early 1900's piece and possibly English.

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

The style is Elizabethan but this sideboard/buffet isn't period, you should be able to find vintage/victorian examples if you google "elizabethan" or "tudor" style fairly easily.  In the third pic down you can see the companion piece to this next to it, a court cupboard. Period examples are available but tend to be pricey:

Here is a nice period example of a elizabethan buffet http://www.marhamchurchantiques.com/antique/elizabethan-three-tier-buffet-2/

Quick google search, it's not exactly elizabethan but it's headed that way, 1890s copy on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/c1890-Antique-Dutch-Solid-Oak-Sideboard-w-Cabinet-Drawers-/251660308951?pt=Antiques_Furniture&hash=item3a981f91d7

I am going to guess sideboard/buffet posted is probably a late victorian dutch repro of an elizabethan buffet, it could be 1st quarter 20th century as well, impossible to tell from pics alone.

To me it looks like a reproduction of a Jacobean oak sideboard that could be made anywhere. It appears to be 20th century but I would need to see the back and the interior. It looks like a good quality piece. Here is an example from a Florida auction.

Well, to me the main distinguishing feature of Elizabethan VS Jacobean is the "orb" turnings on the legs, they are quite distinctive. That is not to say that some period Jacobean did not have those orbs, some did however, as time went along in the 17th century Jacobean became more Mannerist in style and the orb turnings of earlier periods faded out.

When making repro's the designs are often a whim of the designer. Look at the so called Spanish revival pieces. My grandfather, a Dutch cabinet maker called most pieces bastard furniture. I would accept Elizabethan or Jacobean. It would sell for around 300.00 to 500.00 here regardless of what it is.

Yep, absolutely, reproductions often have 2 or more design styles within the same piece. Matter of fact, in late victorian (american) period furniture, sometimes they had 3 or 4 different styles in the same piece, it was almost like furniture makers were throwing all those designs against the wall in the hope that one would catch the eye of a buyer.

If it was me, I'd try to identify what design element on the sideboard tripped my trigger, the legs? (elizabethan) the drawer fronts? (jacobean/mannerist) and go from there in trying to find something that worked for me.

No problem, hope we helped. In an effort to complicate things beyond  all reasonable doubt, the pic below is a court cupboard built in Virginia around 1650-1660 which is clearly in the Jacobean style period. Now the guy who built this cupboard was obviously an immigrant from england who did not get the word that the Elizabethan style was "out" (at least in london) & the Jacobean style was "in". This sort of thing happened A LOT back in the day, where previous styles were still being built long after they were out of style in the big cities.

I kept looking and trying to decide on what style to call this sideboard,,Elizabethan never occurred to me !!  I kept looking at the parts and they just didn`t fit !!   Of course the earlier English styles are a bit out of my realm !!  At least Jacon4 and I are not too far off on timeline !!

Yeah, posters sideboard could have been built anywhere between 1890 & 1950 to be honest, no way to tell really with info that's provided. This style is not "in" these days, it tends to be big & heavy and as frogpatch said earlier you can pick this up at a very reasonable cost, unless you want period stuff at which point, GET OUT YOUR POCKETBOOK!

I kept looking at the parts and they just didn`t fit !!

It's the ORBS! it's ALL about the orbs in Elizabethan stuff.

True,, but as you said the Jacobean pieces had their share too !!  It was the paneled front that threw me with the orbs !!
