Old ring with unknown stone [Picture & links]
« on: October 04, 2014, 02:15:24 pm »
Greetings friends,

I am a full-time student from Montreal city in Quebec/Canada and I am currently looking for a new interesting hobby that could bring me an indirect flow of money to help me pay the bills. Antique collecting seems to fit this task like a glove. Treasure hunting is fun and interesting!

I have recently come across a box filled with little treasures such as old rosaries, religious icons and jewelry. The only problem I have is when I do a research on a specific item, I don't know where to start and I struggle just to find basic information such as the material in which the object is made or the era from which it come from.

This is where you friends come into play.

I will try and post the best pictures I can of the items I am not sure of the era/material/value/etc. and you guy have fun in trying to identify those. I am very curious about the history behind most of these objects and will try to accumulate as much information as I can before considering selling/trading/fixing/etc.

Hi there and welcome to the group !! Would love to try and help but the pics are so large that I can`t even see most of them !! (Dial up) and if you wouldn`t mind please only do one or two items per post !! Its hard to follow and research with so many on one post !! You can post as many as you like but dividing them up helps us !!

Thank you! I was so focused in bringing as much details as possible that I didn't realize the picture size could be an issue! I switched the pictures for direct picture links so you can check them out one by one and I will split the items into more posts!

I can`t get photobucket to come up !!  But I remember it,, looks like a gold plated ring,, it is worn through the plating on the inside !! Dating a ring is difficult since they don`t always follow styles and are purely at the whim of the maker !! I an guessing this at 1940 or 50 !!  But years ago many of the semiprecious stones were inexpensive and were used in costume jewelry so you might want to have it checked with a jeweler !! Could be glass or paste but I would still have it looked at !!

Welcome!   The first ring is brass plated over metal of some sort.  Very ornate!  I'm guessing at early 1900's.  The second German one if you copy and paste the words on it you should get a direction on an internet search.  Try to separate the items into different post.  Too many in one post makes responding difficult.

I actually have a few of them.  Yes they will turn your finger green depending on your body acid level.  They didn't know as much about metals way back so there was a lot of trial and error.

I'd also like to note that the silver colored plating appears to be the outer layer and the brass colored material seems to be the base layer.

Oh and thank you for showing interest !

It may be silver plated brass.  Hard to tell from pics sometimes which is the base layer.  Silver over brass would make sense.

Mart, I agree.  It does look like brass over metal.

I'm sorry to contradict you friends, but the confusion seems to arise from the quality of the picture. My cellphone can't take the picture close enough and stay focused.

I don't know how else I can describe it but if run my nail along the brass I can definitely hit a silver layer.. Also, with good lightning and the right angle you can clearly see a shadow coming from the silver plating onto the brass.
