Cast Iron Pedestal Mailbox
« on: October 26, 2014, 02:51:47 pm »
Hi.
I am having difficulty finding information on a cast iron pedestal mailbox I recently purchased at an auction. I believe it is referred to as a Pony Express mailbox. All the searches I do for information lead me to reproduction Amco cast aluminium pedestal mailboxes. This is NOT one of those. This mailbox appears to be cast iron ( it weighs at least 100lbs), with a brass plate.
I would appreciate any information that is available. Thank you.

Have you looked at the bottom of the base to see if there was a foundry name ??  Should be one somewhere !!

Made in India ?? sometime in the last few years.......These and many without the pedestal are all over the place.  I have one on my house wall with plants in cost the princely sum of 10 pounds Sterling about $15. On one of our TV  Antiques shows recently a so called expert encouraged his team to buy one.......Unbelieva ble.......    However if this a Victorian original its worth a few bob.

The ones that are worth big bucks are the original US Mail stations as shown on The Postal Museum site here:
