Vintage Asian or Japanese Doll?
« on: June 21, 2014, 08:14:49 am »
This is a vintage Asian or Japanese doll I purchased from the TS yesterday and was looking for some information on it. I looked online but there are so many dolls out there of different types I'm not sure what I have.

The doll measures about 10" in height. It probably had some type of glass or plastic box over it at one time. There are no maker marks on it that I can identify and no marks on the bottom.

Does anyone know if this is a Japanese doll, what type of doll it would be called and when it was made?

Thanks!
Kevin

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=japanese+doll+on+wood+base&_sacat=0

At first I thought this was one of the many Japanese dolls brought home by service men from the 40`s through the 70`s !! But as I look at yours the features look more Chinese than Japanese !! The ebay link shows some of the Japanese styles, I have Madam Butterfly in its original case from Hubby`s years in Japan !! Of course the geisha dolls can have many faces and costumes !! KC might recognize this one !!

Thanks mart! Yes I was thinking it may have been from the 40's to 70's too and that it looked more Chinese than Japanese. I looked through the link you provided and didn't find a match but then there are probably hundreds of variations of these dolls.

Hi, this is some character of Chinese opera, but I have no idea who is shown. As to age, I agree.
